Optimizing Your Freight Strategy: Choosing the Right Truck for the Job

Listen to Episode 15 of Hit the Brakes Podcast, where we discuss how the right truck choice can mean lower costs, fewer delays and better efficiency here.

At Fetch Freight, flexibility is key. As a non-asset-based logistics provider, we’re not tied to one type of equipment, helping customers select the best option for their shipping needs. From dry vans, flatbeds, and reefers to box trucks, Sprinter vans, and specialized equipment like over-dimensional and heavy-haul, we help shippers find efficient, cost-effective solutions.

Choosing the right equipment isn’t just about availability, it’s about optimization. Jenkins Mock, one of our sales managers, recently shared insights on how selecting the right truck type impacts efficiency and cost savings.

Jenkins recalls an industrial shipper needing an urgent shipment delivered. Accustomed to using flatbeds and hotshots for construction materials, they instinctively requested a hotshot. However, upon reviewing the shipment—under 1,000 pounds—Jenkins realized a sprinter van would be faster and more cost-effective.

“Because they were in a time crunch, we didn’t want to limit capacity to just one specific equipment type,” Jenkins explains. “A Sprinter van turned out to be the better option—it saved them about 20% and got the shipment there faster.” The switch ensured a quicker turnaround and met the customers timing needs, while also providing cost savings.

In another case, a longtime customer primarily relied on LTL (Less Than Truckload) shipments. By introducing box trucks as an alternative for mid-sized loads—6 to 12 pallets traveling 50 to 300 miles—they discovered an unexpected advantage. This method was more cost-efficient and reduced product damage by minimizing handling and transloading, leading to improved service, lower costs, and streamlined delivery.

As market conditions tighten, flexible shipping options are more important than ever. Diversifying equipment choices leads to better pricing, enhanced service, and greater efficiency. At Fetch Freight, we help customers reevaluate shipping strategies and explore new possibilities to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
